by Paul Howard, 16 Jan 04.
Gorrick MBC are very pleased to announce that Swinley Forest, Berkshire has been selected as the venue for mountain biking in the 2012 Olympic bid.
Swinley Forest is an area of Windsor Forest, owned and managed by The Crown Estate, comprising of 2600 acres of mainly Scots Pine woodland. There are many miles of hard surfaced tracks suitable for family cycling and also a specific expert mountain bike area comprising; rolling fire roads, forest tracks, firebash, winding single track, climbs and descents, stream crossings and technical sections. Mountain bikers regularly travel from far and wide to enjoy the trails, both during the day and night for added excitement.
As a long standing event organiser Gorrick MBC hold mountain bike cross country races (the same format as the Olympics will use) and long distance endurance events in Swinley Forest and at other local venues. These attract riders from all over the South of England.
As an agent of The Crown Estate we also manage The Swinley Forest Cycle Permit Scheme and distribute annual permits to cycle in the forest. Some of the funds raised from Permits go toward building and maintaining the cycle trails within the expert MTB area. Volunteers from Gorrick and local cycle clubs provide the labour.
